Master’s houses Dessau

An UNESCO World Heritage Site

The masters of the Bauhaus and their families inhabited the „masters’ houses“, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926 and located near the central Bauhaus building. Because of their clear language, these houses are considered avant-garde to this day. In 2014, the architectural firm Bruno Fioretti Marquez restored the war-damaged ensemble by re-creating the master’s houses Gropius and Moholy-Nagy along with the kiosk (Trinkhalle), originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

In 1996, the Bauhaus and the masters’ houses became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The directors’ house and the three semi-detached houses, built in 1925 as interpenetrating cubes, were the epitome of the contemporary „designing of life processes” (Gropius) at their time. Their inhabitants created important works of painting and graphic art in the spacious studios of these buildings within a time-span of just a few years. During the war, the director’s house, home of Walter and Ise Gropius, and the house of Moholy-Nagy were destroyed. The five surviving houses are a vivid testimony to the life and art of their inhabitants.

Since May 2014, the reconstructed masters’ houses Gropius and Moholy-Nagy once again complete the picture.
